Elaine Yedlin C00 of Johnston Shaw Inc, Most Empowering Women Leaders of 2021

“Brings a strong dedication, work ethic, and creativity to her clients and success in the organization”

Elaine is an insurance industry veteran who spent over a decade with corporate clients on the design, strategy, execution, and management of their benefit and retirement programs. She graduated from the University of Toronto with a double major in Computer Science and Actuarial Science and followed that by achieving her ASA and ACIA designation in 2011. She started her career at DOT Benefits Consulting, later NFP, and quickly became one of the lead consultants for Canadian and international benefit clients and ran the Toronto benefits office. Elaine brings a strong dedication, work ethic, and creativity to her clients and understands the unique needs each may face when creating programs for their own populations and balancing cost drivers.

Elaine says “I find that to be successful in any role you need to value the product or service you are providing. It is very easy to put time and effort into something you believe in and into organizations and teams that are collaborative, that acknowledge everyone’s contributions, be they coming from the top-level executive or from the junior admin clerk. Regardless of title, seniority, gender, or age everyone has the ability to meaningfully contribute and if they see that those contributions are acknowledged – and I don’t only mean through pay – they are more willing to put that extra effort in.”

“At Johnston Shaw Inc, we provide insurance planning, implementation and unparalleled service all with a singular focus on client values and transparency.”

JSI is a boutique Toronto-based insurance brokerage and consultancy. JSI specializes in estate planning, individual insurance for professionals, and corporate group benefit and retirement plans. JSI models its services to clients on 3 pillars – Professional Advice, Unparalleled Service, and Claims Management. JSI aspires to be a partner in all aspects of insurance, from understanding and identifying needs, to properly placing and managing same. JSI aims to offer transparency and clarity to an industry that is still shrouded in secrecy, especially when it comes to broker remuneration and carrier pricing. The JSI team believes that by telling the truth and doing the right thing for clients, everyone will be able to win and succeed.

While backed by individuals with a lot of industry experience, JSI itself is new in this space, having opened its doors in July of 2020. However, in that short time, it has been able to become one of the top living benefits sellers for Canada Life in Canada and has continued to grow a substantial client base through old and new relationships. This says a lot about what clients consider valuable, as well as the kind of service and assistance JSI, provides.

Employees can make or break a business, so providing them with the correct insurance programs and benefits packages that alleviate their financial or personal concerns can result in happier, more engaged, and loyal workers. Absenteeism and presenteeism can be reduced with the correct programs in place. All of this is true, but none of this can happen if the initiatives implemented are unaffordable or pose a significant danger to the firm. JSI's approach is to work with clients to discover the proper balance of services and costs while also establishing long-term success, security, and peace of mind programs.

Elaine says “I try not to get bogged down with feeling like I always have the answer. I believe that in order to be successful in any industry today you have to always be willing to learn new things and accept change and innovation as it occurs. You are never too old or ‘know enough' to not be able to learn something new. Don’t be afraid of change, embrace it. Continue to seek out opportunities and don’t be afraid to put themselves forward. Put in the time, the work, and the effort and good things will come from that. The more you accomplish and the more you grow, the less power naysayers will have over you. " Elaine's natural leadership aptitude and her unwavering commitment to acquiring new skills in order to help clients and the firm achieve their objectives had made her a standout leader. IEWL
