Construction traditionally has been male-dominated industry, but Nikki Fox has spent 13 years working to expand the industry’s horizons and make it more welcoming to women. “I come from a long line of construction workers, and in 2009, I chose to take the opportunity to mix my operations/business background and my family history and work in the environment of hospitality construction,” she says. “Working in construction in the day-to-day of an operational hotel is my joy. Fast-paced, creating beautiful, safe spaces, all while keeping guests happy, are the smiles that keep me coming back for more.” Fox adds she faced challenges even before officially joining the industry.

Despite these challenges, Nikki has transformed GLR, Inc. with her strong leadership, creativity, and passion for the hospitality industry. She has spearheaded new programs and services that align with the company's mission and values. Her vision and dedication to excellence inspire the team daily.

“I grew up in a time where I was told girls should not be on construction sites. That type of statement was not told to limit me [but] told out of love and to keep me safe,” she explains. “I stay in the industry to continue to make that type of thinking and those type of actions almost unrecognizable.” She does this through her own actions and by helping others. “Throughout my life, I love to seek challenges so I can grow and educate myself. I have had the good fortune to have amazing mentors and find inspiration in the opportunities to mentor others. A key goal in life is to make a positive difference. This can be as small as making a guest smile or as large as saving a client millions of dollars.”

Her advice to other women interested in the construction industry: “Work hard, don’t make excuses, find a mentor, be a mentor, and network. There is no time for pity parties. Women need to stick together and build up one another. Other women are not your enemy. Find solutions! There is always a solution if it is searched for well enough.” Being a pioneering leader, Nikki empowers her team members by encouraging open communication, leading by example, and providing coaching and mentoring. She recognizes potential in employees and nurtures their professional development. Her hands-on management style allows her to really connect with team members.

For Nikki, success took perseverance, hard work, and patience. “I always suggest everyone stay determined, build your skills, take calculated risks, and don’t be afraid of failure. Learn from your mistakes and surround yourself with those that support you,” elucidates Nikki. “My mother has been my lifelong inspiration due to her resilience, compassion, and commitment to helping others. She taught me the importance of integrity, hard work, and believing in myself. And as a female leader, I've learned that building trust and rapport is key. Being straightforward, open-minded, and inclusive helps earn others' respect. Stay true to your values while considering different perspectives.”

Nikki ensures she and her team live up to this by setting clear expectations, leading by example, and fostering team collaboration.

A major achievement for the company recently has been the successful launch of their hospitality division. By leveraging GLR’s experience and acquiring Fort Knight, the company can now offer turnkey hotel renovations to maximize client returns.
